How Doyland's Beagles got Started

Always a hunter first, growing up in Vermont we were and still are avid deer hunters. I hunted fox and bob cats with my brothers too. I had beagles upon graduating from college. They were not " paper" hounds but excellent rabbit dogs.
Moving to NY State in the early 60's to better my financial work outlook. I soon learned about the field trials and my friend Gil Fuller attendend several. I was impressed with the "Toastmaster"hounds because of their excellence shown gunning on snow, thus I developed a strain based on these qualities. I have enfluxed this blood with others through out the years.

Hounds:
My first F.C. was a Toastmaster hound. FC.Brierpac Patches. The 2nd, another toastmaster female, FC.Adirondack Toastie May, finished very quickly. Patches was a 13", my favorite class, which is the only size I keep today. I did finished several 15" though. Toastie May's better sister, Adirondack Dolly, became the best producer. She was caught in a wolf trap at 11/2 age, had to have hind leg aputated, after that she became a great snow hound and we gunned her relentlessly, as can be certified by the "old time" great beaglers like Huck Rollman. You would never know she has only 3 legs. Anyway, I decided to breed her to her sire, an idea not relished by the "experts". That litter produced F.C. Doyland's Cash Cannon, who in turn became a great producer. Another son of Dolly's, F.C. Doylands Little Sport became one of the best hunting dogs I ever owned. You will find "Cash" in many pedigrees of todays hounds. Check out pedigrees of I.F.C. Argentieal Sticker, I.F.C. Concert Big Jack, just to mention a couple of excellent producers.
It's hard to diminish the talents of alot of my champions, when you compare one against the others, but of the bitches I finished, it's my opinion the talents of I.F.C. Coquette Rouge, I.F.C. Pools Singer, I.F.C White Blaze Speedy and I.F.C. Murrays Holly Prop rate the highest.   Maybe I'm saving the best for last as the greatest hunting dog I've ever had was Doyland's Justice.   "J", as I called him, was given to me by my friend Frank Rooney, he had been run over by a milk truck when he was a pup, thus a bad hind quarter hindered his field trialing, although he won some trials. No title, but a champion all the way. He produced some excellent champions.
A few other males I enjoyed tremendously are I.F.C. Fredy Line Joe, I.F.C. MJR Concert Big Jack, and F.C. Crown Point Yankee. F.C. Doyland's Carrot, F.C. Weeny Rooney and F.C. Pine BushSpark Plug were nice gun dogs too. I.F.C. MJR Concert Big Jack is at stud and producing well. I have some outstanding youngsters out of him that I'm training at present.
I've met some great people all over North America, enjoying the sport at it's very best. I have judge some great hounds over 5 decades & stories we could spend hours on. Age slows everyone down I guess, but I'm still hoping to see many friends at some upcoming trials and hope I have something worthy to compete with. My preference right now is training on my grounds and watching young hounds progress.

        Respectfully,
        Dick Doyle
